This small African wooden mask has exactly that rough, direct look that makes hand-carved tribal art so strong. Not a sleek decorative piece, but an object with character: austere, expressive, and visibly handmade. The face is powerfully constructed with deep eyes, an open mouth, and a heavy brow line. The form is simple, almost abstract, giving the mask an immediate strong presence. It is precisely the irregularities, drying lines, and cutting marks that make it interesting. The wood has an old dark brown patina with natural wear and weathering. On the back, it is clearly visible that the mask was hollowed out by hand. The two openings may have been used for hanging or mounting.
