Antique Bronze Vishnu Statue – South India – ca. 1920
This refined bronze statue from South India depicts the Hindu god Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. The statue is cast in the classical tradition of Tamil Nadu and displays a beautiful, weathered dark patina that confirms its age of over a century.
Iconography and Symbolism
Vishnu is depicted here in a stately, frontal pose (Samabhanga) on a detailed lotus pedestal (Padmasana) atop a square base. In his four hands, he holds his sacred attributes: the Shanka (conch shell) and the Chakra (discus) in the upper hands, while his lower right hand makes the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of reassurance).
Craftsmanship and Condition
Weighing 520 grams, this solid bronze statue feels solid and high-quality. The casting is detailed, from the facial features to the decorations on the crown (Kirita Mukuta) and the clothing. The object is in excellent antique condition without restorations, with an authentic patina that develops only through time and devotion.
