Lakshmi: The Promise of Prosperity
This magnificent wooden panel depicts Lakshmi—also worshipped as Sri Devi—the supreme Hindu goddess of wealth, beauty, and abundance, and the consort of the god Vishnu. She stands in a graceful, frontal pose. In her hand, she holds a still-closed lotus bud, the universal symbol of purity and spiritual fertility. This specific gesture expresses a 'latent awakening': the promise of future prosperity and the continuity of the life cycle. Her other hand rests beside her body in a posture of calmness and benevolence.
Dravidian art and mastery
The goddess is sculpted with great mastery according to the classical canons of Southern Dravidian art. This is beautifully reflected in her full, round face with stylized features, the heavy earrings, the high bust line, and the lush ornaments that emphasize both her divine and feminine character. Her detailed pearl belt and solemn posture are characteristic of the architectural sculptures from the temples of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Origin and authenticity
Originally, this woodcarving formed part of a larger architectural element—most likely a pillar, lintel, or door frame of a shrine dedicated to Vishnu, where Lakshmi served as the giver of blessings and prosperity. The surface of the wood has acquired a beautiful patina over the centuries, subtly blackened by time, and naturally eroded in some places. This authentic wear, the old cracks, and the missing fragments actually contribute to the immense soul and historical value of this 18th/19th-century artwork.
Placement in your interior
With its elongated, vertical shape and authentic appearance, this wall panel is a serene resting point for your home. On the back, the panel is fitted with an authentic old iron ring, allowing it to be mounted directly and securely to the wall.
