Antique Japanese wooden statue of Kobo Daishi (Kūkai) placed in a traditional zushi shrine. The ensemble consists of the statue, a wooden pedestal, and the protective shrine cabinet with hinged doors. Such zushi were used in Japan in temples and home altars for daily devotion.
Kobo Daishi (774–835) is one of the most revered Buddhist monks in Japan and the founder of the Shingon school of esoteric Buddhism. He is also associated with the famous Shikoku pilgrimage of 88 temples, a spiritual route that is still walked today.
The statue depicts Kobo Daishi seated in monk's robes with prayer beads and a scroll in his hands, symbols of meditation and teaching. The combination of statue, pedestal, and shrine forms a classic devotional ensemble such as was used in Japanese home altars. The surfaces show natural signs of age, wear, and remnants of older polychromy. These characteristics are consistent with religious objects from the Japanese Edo period.
