This Punu mask originates from Gabon and was traditionally used during initiation and dance ceremonies. The mask consists of a finely carved wooden face, covered with light pigment, combined with a carefully woven hood of reed and natural fibers. This construction ensured that the mask could be worn firmly on the head during ritual movements.
The subdued facial expression, closed eyes, and geometric details are characteristic of Punu masks and refer to spiritual tranquility, transition, and ancestor worship. Wear, discoloration, and the aged weaving indicate actual use and natural aging, not later decorative production.
This object is an authentic ceremonial mask and represents the rich mask culture of Central Africa, where form, material, and ritual are inextricably linked.
