Antique Wooden Buddha Statue from Burma – Large Mandalay Buddha with Mirror Inlay

This impressive Buddha statue comes from Burma (Myanmar) and is carved in the Mandalay tradition. The Buddha sits in the bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching posture that symbolizes the moment of enlightenment. The calm gaze, broad shoulders, and stable posture give the statue a powerful yet serene appearance.

The statue is carved from solid hardwood and was originally covered with red lacquer and gold leaf. Small mirror glass inlays have been placed in the robe, a traditional Burmese technique that allowed the light from candles and oil lamps in temples to reflect. Some of these inlays are still visible.

Over the years, parts of the lacquer and gilding have worn off, which actually gives the statue an authentic temple appearance. The surface clearly shows that this is an object that has been used and appreciated for a long time.

With its size and weight, this Buddha statue has a strong presence and makes an impressive piece for an interior, meditation spot, or collection of Asian art.
