This is a remarkable example of a Dento Kokeshi from the traditional Nanbu lineage, crafted in the renowned Kobo Dekunobo workshop in Hanamaki. The doll is by the respected 3rd generation master craftsman Morizo Susumago (1950–present) and dates from the late Showa to early Heisei period.
What makes this object rare is the combination of the historical 'Kina-Kina' tradition – where the neck construction gives the head subtle movement – with rich, artistic painting. While many Nanbu dolls remain unpainted, this masterpiece is decorated with vibrant camellias (Tsubaki) and floral motifs. A dark, inlaid wooden ring elegantly breaks up the tapering body. On the bottom, the original master signature of Susumago Morizo is handwritten.
The object is in excellent, collectible condition. The indigenous Japanese wood is bright and free of discoloration, and the mechanical neck joint functions perfectly. The floral pigments in yellow, red, and green have retained their original saturation, making this a powerful decorative and historical object.
