This 19th-century Chinese bronze Buddha statue depicts a seated Buddha in a meditation posture on a richly detailed base featuring two dragons. The Buddha is portrayed with a full, relaxed physique and open hands resting on the knees, dressed in a traditional monk's robe with the right breast partially visible.
The base is decorated all around with dragons flanking a central emblem, a motif that symbolizes protection, strength, and cosmic order in Chinese Buddhist art. The combination of Buddha and dragon base is typical of Chinese representations and clearly distinguishes this statue from South Asian or Southeast Asian Buddhas.
The statue is traditionally cast in a copper alloy or bronze. The closed underside shows old core remnants and irregularities consistent with pre-industrial casting techniques. The dark patina and wear on protruding parts are consistent with natural aging and prolonged use.
