This hand-carved Chinese wooden relief panel depicts a scene from the famous Chinese folk legend Bai She Zhuan, better known as the Legend of the White Snake. In the center stand three elegant figures in a boat under a parasol, surrounded by a classical landscape with mountains, bridges, willow trees, and a pagoda. The depiction is often read as Xu Xian with Bai Suzhen and her companion Xiao Qing, a recognizable motif from this romantic story. The relief is deeply carved with multiple layers in the landscape and is framed by a richly carved floral border, making the panel stand out strongly against the wall and revealing great detail up close.
