This exceptional Japanese bronze Buddha was cast around 1900 during the late Meiji period and represents the timeless elegance of traditional Japanese Buddhist sculpture. Seated in the serene Dhyana Mudra, the Buddha embodies meditation, wisdom and inner balance.

Originally finished with a rich layer of gilding, the statue still preserves authentic remnants of its original surface in protected areas. Combined with its naturally developed patina, impressive weight and traditional casting technique, this is a remarkable collector's piece with genuine historical character.

Original Fire-Gilded Surface

Detailed microscopic examination using a Dino-Lite digital microscope revealed numerous surviving areas of the original gilded surface. These remnants are preserved deep within protected recesses of the sculpture where centuries of natural wear have left traces of the original finish intact. The relationship between the gilding, the natural corrosion layers and the historic patina reflects the long life of an authentic temple sculpture.

Traditional Bronze Casting

The statue was produced using the traditional hollow lost-wax casting technique. Examination of the interior reveals the original casting core, historic structural reinforcements and naturally aged mineral deposits. These construction details are consistent with traditional Japanese bronze casting methods and demonstrate the quality of the original craftsmanship.

Dhyana Mudra

The Buddha is depicted in the classic Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation. Both hands rest peacefully in the lap, symbolising concentration, spiritual awakening and inner harmony. This iconography has been revered for centuries throughout Japanese Buddhist temples.

Condition

The sculpture remains in authentic antique condition with age-appropriate wear throughout the surface. The original patina, surviving gilding and honest signs of age contribute to its remarkable presence and authenticity. No modern overpainting is visible that would diminish the historical integrity of the sculpture.
