This impressive, hand-carved sculpture, standing 54 cm tall, is a magnificent example of Balinese craftsmanship from the mid-20th century (circa 1950). It depicts a Rishi, a mythological sage or spiritual teacher, emanating a powerful and protective presence.
Refined Craftsmanship & Symbolism
The sculpture is crafted from solid tropical hardwood and adorned with rich polychrome painting in traditional earth tones, accented with gold leaf. Particularly striking is the extremely detailed carving: from the finely sculpted beard and expressive facial features to the floral motifs on the back of the clothing and the characteristic diamond pattern on the sarong.
