This impressive, hand-carved statue, 54 cm tall, is a magnificent example of Balinese craftsmanship from the mid-20th century (ca. 1950). It depicts a Rishi, a mythological sage or spiritual teacher, who radiates a powerful and protective presence.

Refined Craftsmanship & Symbolism

The statue is crafted from solid tropical hardwood and decorated with rich polychrome painting in traditional earth tones, accented with gold leaf. Particularly striking is the extremely detailed carving: from the finely rendered beard and expressive facial features to the floral motifs on the back of the clothing and the characteristic diamond pattern on the sarong.

Condition & Authenticity This object dates from the period when Balinese art enjoyed great international appreciation due to the unprecedented quality of the carving.
