A North Thai wooden Buddha in the Lanna tradition, seated on a throne carried by a ring of elephants. Three of them face forward and the rest stand along the sides and back, with the seat resting on the animals. On a cabinet or altar, the whole piece, 52.5 cm tall in black and gold, can be taken in at a glance.
The eyes are inlaid in white with dark pupils. Gold leaf still clings to the cheeks, nose and brows, crackled and worn away on the high points, and black lacquer remains in the folds. This Lanna Buddha sits in bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture, with the right shoulder bare, snail-shell curls and a flame rising from the ushnisha. The figure is carved from hollowed hardwood, lacquered black and finished with gold leaf.
