Old Javanese Bronze Vishnu Statue from Indonesia – Four-armed Deity with Chakra and Shell

Retail price: € 245.–

This compact yet strikingly heavy bronze statue depicts a four-armed Vishnu, one of the most important deities in Hinduism. Vishnu is regarded as the protector and preserver of order, balance, and harmony. As a result, this is not only a decorative Asian art object but also a statue with clear spiritual significance.

The identification as Vishnu is primarily supported by the two recognizable attributes in the upper hands: the chakra or cosmic wheel and the shankha, the sacred conch shell. Together, these refer to protection, direction, strength, and the restoration of balance. The front hands rest peacefully in the lap, allowing the statue to retain a meditative appearance despite the powerful iconography.

The statue is crafted from a heavy copper alloy with a silver-gray, high-tin bronze-like sheen. The dark patina, signs of wear, and distinct green oxidation on the base give the object a weathered character. The flat underside displays old traces of a former collector's or inventory label, indicating that the sculpture has been part of a collection for a considerable time.

Stylistically, this sculpture fits within the Javanese and Indonesian sculptural tradition, with references to older Majapahit influences. The square base, double lotus base, round halo, and compact solid casting give the sculpture a powerful presence despite its small size. It is a suitable object for a home altar, meditation room, display case, or interior where protection, balance, and spiritual power take center stage.
