This large Burmese Buddha statue is crafted from a single block of wood and richly gilded with gold leaf. The statue dates from the Mandalay period (c. 1850–1900) and displays all the characteristic features of classic Burmese temple and altar statues from the 19th century. The Buddha is depicted seated in bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of touching the earth, a symbol of enlightenment and spiritual victory.
The gilding shows natural wear with visible red lacquer residue and traces of paint, typical of prolonged religious use. The finely carved robe is richly decorated with engraved patterns and green inlay, while the inlaid eyes give the statue a lively and devotional appearance — a strong stylistic feature of Mandalay workshops. The open base with deep hollowing and visible chisel marks confirms the traditional manual construction and rules out modern manufacturing.
An authentic and impressive wooden Buddha statue from Burma, intended for serious collectors of Southeast Asian Buddhist art.
