Monumental Gilded Tibetan Shakyamuni Buddha Statue – Abhaya Mudra
This monumental gilded Shakyamuni Buddha statue is a powerful Tibetan / Himalayan monastic object with an exceptional presence. The Buddha is depicted in Abhaya mudra: the raised right hand as a sign of protection, reassurance, and the removal of fear.
The meaning of this image is particularly strong. Abhaya mudra stands for inner peace, trust, protection, and spiritual safety. It is a posture that literally says: do not be afraid. As a result, this image is particularly suitable for an entrance, meditation room, practice room, altar, or a powerful spiritual interior.
The reverse side shows the traditional Tibetan Kasaya monk's robe, hand-engraved in a geometric rice field pattern. This pattern refers to the Buddhist monk's robe, composed of symbolic planes like old patches of cloth that together form one sacred garment. Within the Buddhist tradition, this also stands for the field of merit: spiritual nourishment, discipline, and wisdom.
A remarkable feature of this statue is the visible monastic work: the original lines of the robe have been worn away in several places through prolonged ritual use, touching, and cleaning. Subsequently, certain lines were re-incised by hand to keep the sacred form and the robe visible. This type of ritual re-incision is fitting for a statue that was used for a long time in a monastic context and kept alive within devotional practice.
The thick old gilding, dark underlayers, copper-colored wear zones, internal oxidation, and mineral deposits on the inside support the character of an old, traditionally cast statue. The surface of the object shows no modern decorative finish, but rather a layered age with clear traces of use, veneration, and time.
