The Silent Witness – Museum-quality 18th-Century Style Temple Relief
A rare surviving fragment of religious heritage from Southeast Asia. This massive hardwood panel exudes the raw, untamed beauty of centuries-old veneration.
Authenticity in Every Detail
This panel is an honest and unrestored piece of history. Our inspection confirms that it was hewn directly from the trunk of a hardwood tree with primitive hand tools – likely an addler or hand axe. The rough notches on the reverse and the deep, natural shrinkage cracks are irrefutable evidence of a dating to the 18th or early 19th century.
Layered History
The central Buddha figure in the temple niche is surrounded by a fascinating layering of finish. Beneath the remaining flakes of the original gold leaf, the traditional red cinnabar lacquer is visible, which has become matte and weathered over the centuries. The deep erosion of the wood and the layered patina of soot, incense and time give this object a museum authority that cannot be imitated.
