Rare 18th-Century Lanna Buddha with Elephant Frieze

This exceptional bronze statue of the Shakyamuni Buddha is a masterpiece from the Lanna tradition (Northern Thailand) and dates from the late 18th century (ca. 1750–1800). The statue is a rare survivor of a glorious era, characterized by both spiritual depth and superior craftsmanship.

Unique Iconography & Elephant Base

The Buddha sits enthroned on an extremely rare openwork base, decorated with a detailed frieze of elephants. This motif is highly unusual and indicates a statue of great ritual or royal status. The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, the moment of ultimate enlightenment. Scientific Audit Audited by 1stBuddha: The solid casting (6.2 kg) retains its original fire gilding (mercury amalgam). Forensic analysis shows natural mineral encrustation and authentic copper corrosion originating from within the gold layer. The interior contains original lime and ash residue from the casting process.
