This is an exceptional example by the renowned Japanese craftsman Kazuo Akiyama (1935–1991). This 30 cm tall Dento Kokeshi from the Zao-Takayu line is an officially selected piece for the prestigious Shiroishi Kokeshi Competition, dated May 3, 1981.
The doll is characterized by the iconic Zao-Takayu style, recognizable by its refined, hand-painted facial features and vibrant chrysanthemum (Kiku) motifs in red and green/blue. Unlike regular Kokeshi dolls, this piece offers documented historical value directly traceable to a Japanese exhibition history.
This piece is in excellent vintage condition. The wood shows a beautiful, even patina, and the hand-painted pigments are remarkably vibrant after more than 45 years. All authenticity markings, including the official inscription and the original exhibition sticker on the base, are fully intact.
