This exceptional and characterful wooden relief depicts the four-armed Hindu god Lord Vishnu. The statue dates from the late 19th century (ca. 1880–1910) and originates from South India (Tamil Nadu / Kerala). This type of carving originally served as an architectural element within a historic mansion (haveli) or as a decorative panel on a ceremonial temple chariot (chariot).
The deity is depicted in a stately, frontal pose. In his two upper hands, he holds his traditional attributes: the Shankha (sacred conch) and the Chakra (the cosmic wheel/discus). The lower hands are positioned in the Abhaya (reassurance) and Varada (blessing) mudras. Craftsmanship: The statue is hand-carved from a heavy, dense quality hardwood and subsequently richly painted with traditional pigments. The original red, green, and golden-yellow polychromy has been beautifully preserved in the recessed parts of the carving.
The authentic wear, the drying cracks in the wood, and the worn paint on the high contact points bear witness to decades of ritual use and natural aging. This 'honest' patina enhances the historical charm and proves the authenticity of this unique collector's item.
